Question : Where are solar cells used?

There a 4 big applications for photovoltaic solar cells:

1) In space

2) At isolated places

3) In apparatus with a low consumtion

4) In regions with a dense electricity network

In regions with a dense electricity network, the solar energy can act as a temporarily storage, as a buffer. The photovoltaic solar panel is connected to the power grid via an invertor, i.e. a device that converts direct current to alternating current. When the photovoltaic electricity production is higher than the local consumption, the surplus is delivered to the power grid. When the local generation is lower than the local consumption, electricity is taken from the power grid.

Answer: in space, at isolated places, in apparatus with a low consumption and as buffer in regions with a dense electricity network.
